Filed under: Events, Islam, Media — webmaster »

As a part of Dr. Jackson’s two-day stay in New York at NYU he partook in a panel discusion on race. Here’s a collection of Google videos that give an account of pertinent words. To quote Dr. Jackson,

“My view is that race is a social construct, but my view is also…, so what?!

Links here and here. Enjoy.

Update

Sherman Jackson Speech At Western Knight Center

Filed under: Media — webmaster »

This is a really big file [153 MB], but it’s well worth the download time. Jackson gives a talk at the Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism entitled, Covering Islam and Muslims in America, November 6th, 2005. Download the file here (Windows Media Player required). We are so lucky here in America to have someone like Sherman who is a lightning rod for our voice - to push forward the cause for developing a truly unique, Islamic and American voice for Muslims living here in America. Keeping you up to date on the latest Sherman Jackson news, this is Marqas reporting from the Manrilla News Room.

Sherman Jackson

Filed under: Media — webmaster »

Sherman Jackson I have taken it upon myself, due to popular demand (not joking here) to commit some space on my server to Sherman “Abd al-Hakim” Jackson. Dr. Sherman Jackson is a professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies in the department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan. Sherman has written many articles on Islam and is without a doubt, one of the most important people alive today writing on the Muslim experience from “Western eyes”. I also consider Dr. Jackson a friend, one who has tolerated my enthusiasm with patience and a smile (although I’m sure there’s times he’s wanted to knock some sense into my head!!). His latest piece of work is Islam and the Blackamerican: Looking Toward the Third Resurrection. It is my hope to put up current and revelant material relating to Sherman. This is by no means an official site for Dr. Jackson (although I have suggested such a site, being authored by yours truly [nudge...nudge]). So no, you cannot contact him through this site. I hope you fill find it engaging, insightful and above all, useful. And that goes for the Muslim and non-Muslim reader alike. So, As-Salaam’ ‘alaykum and feel free to browse the shelves. No eating or drinking. Thank you.
