elf Portrait © 2007 Marc Manley Con frequencia. Spanish for “often” or perhaps more literally, “with frequency”. That’s the name of this photo project but you’ll read more about that in a minute.

So I got this photo gig that I needed to purchase a new lens for - a moderate wide angle lens. I’ve had my Canon 10D for over three years now and I’ve only owned one lens for it [a 100mm f2.8 macro]. So when this job came down the pike, I decided to pick up another lens. What better way to have an excuse to drop a couple of bills and start a new photo project, right?

My other current project, Philadelphian - The Low-fi Shots Series, is all done on my cell phone camera. I dig using that piece of equipment for reasons you can read there but I also wanted to have something a little more upscale and so I picked up a Canon EF 28mm 2.8 wide angle lens. I prefer using prime lenses because it makes you concious of what you’re looking through - you can’t just decide to “zoom in” or “zoom out”. You have to work within the confines of the prime lens. I also like it because prime lenses operate like human vision. If we want to see something upclose, we have to walk up to it and vice versa if we want to take in the grand scale of something, we have to back off. I also like the over all better perfomance of prime lenses but that’s another discusion.

So this project will proceed on a daily basis - just me and my 28mm lens and what ever I’m able to capture while running around the streets of Philadelphia and the wider world. Check back often or subscribe to the feed. Thanks and enjoy.

A pause from shooting has changed you some. Especially compositionally, but that is my extreme interest.

You did all these shots with your 28mm?

You know I love “as is” photography, so I cannot help but enjoy very much these first steps into what may become a continuing project. And thanks for finding my red pen.

For eons, we struggle to grasp
    The edge of the universe
Like ladling to drain an ocean,
    While we are able,
With one breathe, to dry it up.
    Certainly, completing a task
Ends the joy of the attempt.
It may be wrong to finish,
    Even our incarnations.
Immortality may lay in our errors.
