Thank You, Sam Cooke
February 22, 2008 | 13 Safar 1429

Brother Cooke’s voice has given me so much comfort at a time in my life where I’ve never felt so much pain. Pain enough to make one question one’s beliefs [in my case, question but not change :) ]. Thank you, Sam Cooke. God rest your soul.

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I’ve been running ever since
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

It’s been too hard living but I’m afraid to die
Cause I don’t know what’s up there beyond the sky
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

I go to the movie and I go downtown
somebody keep telling me don’t hang around
It’s been a long, a long time coming

But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
And I say brother help me please
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees

Ohhhhhhhhh…..

There been times that I thought I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able to carry on
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Love this song. One of the most moving scenes from Spike Lee’s Malcolm X was when this was played as he was making his way to the auditorium where he would be murdered.

Pray Allah relieves your pain brother.

My uncle has touched so many lives over the course of the last 40+ years, Manrilla, but it still warms my heart to hear personal stories like yours. I’m sure Brother Cooke is grateful as well.

Erik - thank you so much for posting a comment. It is a great honor to hear from a family member of Mr. Cooke. As you have stated and are far better acquainted with the effect that his voice and presence had on so many, I can testify that only God could touch a man and give him that talent. I am so grateful for his music, as I have recently had major back surgery. Part of my coping has been your uncle’s music. He was truly a blessed man. Many, many thanks and my best to your family.

Brother Majnun [a.k.a., Rhyme & Reason!] - salaams and thank you. Yes, that was a heavy scene and I often think of both Malcolm and Martin with that song. It’s also a song that’s brought me a lot of comfort. I’ll be digging into your blog soon.

Salaams - may Allah preserve you.

    Iris,

Salaams. And thank you. You’re always so kind me!! It really helps to see little things like that. May Allah reward your kindness.

    Salaams,

I second everyone else’s sentiments Marc. May Allah indeed give you ease. Ameen

I firmly believe that He will for you inspire in me and many others true empathy and care for your well being.

    Warmest Regards
