In lieu of the previous post, I thought I’d add this link to some material by Olivier Roy, the author of The Political Failure of Islam, has written a new book, Globalized Islam: The Search for a New Ummah, as a sort of sequel or follow up to the first book. About the Author
Marc has an extensive background as an educator, having taught such diverse subjects as ESL, Arabic, and Islamic studies in both the Detroit area and now in Philadelphia. In 2008, he receive his certificate [ijāzah] in the rules of delivering the Friday sermon [ahkām al-Khutbah] from Imam Anwar Muhaimin of the Quba Institute. Marc now works as a public speaker and khatib in the greater Philadelphia area and many points East and West.

Roy is off his mark regarding Algeria which is his bailiwick.
The Muslim FIS in Algeria is superceded by the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) which is exceedingly violent. Thanks!

To be sure, there are some items that I might contend with over Roy but I do find the work a good stimulating read.
