Islamically Not Permissible (For Christ’s Sake!!)
January 19, 2007 | 29 Dhul-Hijjah 1427

Yeah, my temper’s pretty short these days. I just don’t have the stamina to deal with morronic statements such as these. I received this in an email from a friend of mine. Ridiculous…

I don’t like to start arguments here, but let us focus here on the matter at hand, the name “Elizabeth”…, is it okay [to] have this name Islamically? The name Elizabeth has two meanings (God Is An Oath and second meaning God Is Seven ) both [of which] are Islamically not permissible…

Okay…, will someone please tell me why this is even an issue? C’mon, folks!!! There’s so many other important, far more pressing issues that Muslims should be dealing with (like the length of our beards and the permissibility of black vs. white niqab). Any more stuff like this and I’m gonna choke someone an inch from their life. “Good grief, Charlie Brown…”

What about gay hairdressers? If you wear hijab can you go to a gay hairdresser? My friends and I are thinking of going on ask-imam.com –this is very serious…everyone knows men are better hairdressers - especially gay men!
    Enjoy your hiatus :)

The Prophet, aleyhi salatu wa salaam, changed the names of those Companions of his who had names that were not in keeping w/ our ‘aqida or adab. It’s not wrong for someone to be concerned about this — perhaps the person with such a name wants to do what is pleasing to Allah. It becomes a problem, however, when we get wrapped up in it, when we think these things are the answer to our problems: if I just have this name, and wear this color, and pray with my hands in this position, then everything will be wonderful… Perhaps “Elizabeth” is also terribly concerned about poverty, orphans, and violence… but that’s not reflected in one simple question about a name… just a thought.
