The Critical Bias Against Islam
September 28, 2006 | 05 Ramadhan 1427

I thought I’d share some of the papers that I’m writing for one of my courses this term. Of course leave your feedback.

Islam undoubtedly suffers from critical bias in the realm of American and European minds. Centuries of colonialism and Orientalist thought have informed the greater publics of both these entities on what and what does not constitute Islam. From such works as A Thousand and One Nights to Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations, Islam has been demonized in the American/European context. But with the advent of September 11th, Islam is now attacked openly as the icon of everything which goes against that which the “free societies” of the Free World stand for. Read more this entry »

The State of Things
September 19, 2006 | 25 Shaban 1427

“Things sure ain’t what they used to be.” I’m sure Islam was not the topic Duke Ellington had in mind when sitting at the piano when he decided to play that tune - but it’s the song that’s on my mind. To be frank for a moment, I will vent some very real pessimism about the state of Muslims today. That pessimism has been an accretion, building slowly but steady over the almost fifteen years I’ve been Muslim. No, this isn’t an apologist’s essay. Nor is it some sort of apostate’s epistle. Rather this are just a few confused ramblings so stay with me if you can. And as usual, leave feedback if you feel so moved. Read more this entry »

Philly Shots - Constitution Day 2006
September 18, 2006 | 24 Shaban 1427

In the past I have taken a reserved interest in our nation’s history. Some of that is probably due to issues I have with its and our (meaning people of color) history with it. But I was invited to take part of an interfaith reading of the Constitution for Consitution Day. America Reads the Constitution was a public reading of the Constitution by area religious leaders, celebrating religious freedom in our founding document. Imam Anwar of IMB and several other members were invited as well from the Muslim community. I read Amendment I, II and III (web movie [1mb]).

Amendement I: Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Amemdement II: Right to Bear Arms

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Amendment III: Quartering of Soldiers

No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

It was really great to see people from many different faiths and backgrounds partaking freely in the event. My hope is that I will see Muslims more actively seeking to be involved in American public square. Below are a few shots. Special thanks to Titus and Maureen, who made the trip up to Philly from Durham just for this event. Your support is much appreciated. Additional thanks to Titus and Denise for lending a hand with a few of the photos. I’ll post some short video recaps in the future. Enjoy.

Super quick samples here. Did a quick shoot this morning (yes, in the rain) on Temple’s campus and then one shot as I headed home after work. Enjoy.
